What is Metamucil?
Metamucil is a multi-health fiber supplement that helps lower cholesterol to promote heart health* and restore regularity.Made with 100% natural psyllium fiber, Metamucil comes in a variety of forms (powder, wafer and capsule) and flavors (Orange, Pink Lemonade, Berry and unflavored). Since most Americans only get 10 to 15 grams of fiber per day through their normal diet vs. the recommended 25 to 38 grams1, Metamucil has provided an easy and convenient way to add fiber to your diet for over 75 years.
How Does Metamucil Work?
For Heart Health:
Psyllium fiber, the natural dietary fiber found in Metamucil, is clinically proven to help lower cholesterol levels because it forms a thick gel that traps some cholesterol, bile acids and waste in the gut. Talk to your doctor to understand how Metamucil, along with lifestyle changes such as exercise and a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet, may help reduce your risk of heart disease by lowering cholesterol*.
For Digestive Health:
Metamucil contains a bulk-forming fiber without any chemical stimulants that helps promote regularity. The active ingredient, psyllium, is a harvested grain that absorbs and holds moisture. This causes the psyllium to swell, supplying the necessary bulk to help soften stool. Metamucil generally produces an effect in 12 to 72 hours.
What is Psyllium Fiber?
Not all fibers work the same way. Psyllium husk is derived from the seed of the Plantago ovata plant and is extensively cultivated in India and Pakistan. The United States is the world's largest importer of psyllium husk, where it is most often used as a bulk-fiber laxative, in foods and dietary supplements like Metamucil. Diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol that include 7 grams of soluble fiber per day from psyllium may reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering cholesterol.
